Print guidelines

WEST OAKLAND CAMERA CLUB

(a non-profit, non-partisan organization)

 

I.       OBJECTIVES:

 

The sole purpose of the West Oakland Camera Club is to promote photography through the following:

 

1.   Monthly competitions.

2.   Instructional Programs

3.   Affiliation with the G.D.C.C.C.

4.   Discussion - a meeting place to share mutual interest

 

II.      MEMBERSHIP:

 

Membership in W.O.C.C. shall be

1.   Open to any person

2.   Established by payment of annual dues

3.   All new members will receive a membership packet as follows:

a.   Copy of by-laws

b.   Print and Slide Competition Guidelines                         

c.   Slide marking illustration

d.   Membership card with assignments on back

 

III.     ANNUAL DUES:

 

1.   Annual dues are $25.00 per calendar year, per person.

2.   Dues for persons joining after June 30 of a given calendar year are $15.00.

3.   Dues for persons joining after October 31 of a calendar year shall be $25.00 which will apply to the following calendar year's membership.

4.   Dues for persons under 18 years of age are $10.00.

5.   Dues must be paid by the last meeting in February in order to compete in W.O.C.C. competition.  New members must be paid in full prior to competing.

 

IV.    ELECTIONS AND NOMINATIONS:

 

1.   Election of officers will be in December of the even numbered years, and the term of office shall begin the following January of the odd numbered year.  The term of office shall be two years.

 

2.   The president shall appoint a five-member nominating committee no later than the first meeting in October preceding the election.

 

3.   The committee shall present their nominations to the membership no later than the first meeting in November.

 

4.   Officers may serve only two consecutive terms.

V.     OFFICERS AND DUTIES:

 

1.   President:

a.   presides at all membership meetings

b.   appoints all committees

c.   serves as ex-officio member of all committees

d.   serves as liaison to the G.D.C.C.C.

 

2.   Vice President

a.   shall in the absence of the president, assume all duties of the president.

 

3.   Secretary-Treasurer

a.   shall have charge of all moneys of the club.

b.   collect dues and provide proper receipt and membership card.

c.   assure that new members receive a printed "new member" packet, immediately upon joining.

d.   provide and update an accurate record of the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all current members.

e.   provide a written annual report to the membership at the first meeting in December.

 

VI.   COMMITTEES

 

1.   Competition

a.   Projectionist: projects slides for competition at meetings.

b.   Recorder

1.   provides written record of winners

2.   maintains record of individual standings

3.   announces winners

c.   Slide Director

1.   responsible for care of all slides left for consideration at the G.D.C.C.C. competitions.

2.   insures a timely return to members, of those slides not being held for Council competitions.

3.   takes the slides to the G.D.C.C.C. competitions.

d.   Print Director

1.   responsible for the care of all prints left for consideration at the G.D.C.C.C. competitions.

2.   insures a timely return of those prints not being held, to the membership.

3.   takes prints to the G.D.C.C.C. competitions.

 

2.   Assignment

a.   will provide a list of subjects for the monthly assignment competition.

b.   the committee will have a minimum of three members.

c.   the committee will accept suggestions from the membership.

d.   members will be appointed annually by the president no later than October.

e.   the committee will provide a new assignment list by the first meeting in December .

 

3.   Refreshments

a.   insures that refreshments will be provided at all meetings.

VII.  PRINT COMPETITIONS

 

Presently, we judge all prints as one group and as one class.  They are, however, divided into three groups and in different classes when entered in GDCCC competitions.

 

There are three divisions of prints.  (See attached guidelines)  

 

VIII.   SLIDE COMPETITIONS

 

1.   Nature and Open competition will be held at the first meeting of each month.

2.   Assignment slide competition will be held at the second meeting of each month unless there is no second meeting.  In at case, it will be held at the first meeting of that month.

3.   Slides must be entered by 7:45 p.m. to be eligible for competition. (See attached guidelines)

 

IX  COUNCIL COMPETITIONS

will be held in accordance with the rules of G.D.C.C.C.

 

MEETINGS:

 

1.    will be held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

a.   the first meeting of the month will be the nature and open slide competition.

b.   the second meeting of the month will be for:

1. programs

2. slide critique

3. special events

4. assignment slide competition.

2.    Meetings may be cancelled, or date changes may be made by the president or a vote of the membership.

On the site you will find a photo gallery, club activities, competition standings, announcements, informative articles, links to other sites, bylaws, a listing of videos available for rental from the club, current officers, club member items for sale, welcome pages for new members, meeting location maps, club assignments and calendar, digital competition rules etc. There is also a site search feature to help you rapidly locate information within the club's site.

 

XII    RESOLVE:

 

The above by-laws of West Oakland Camera Club, have been approved by a vote of the membership in December of 2003, and take effect on the first day of January, 2004.

PRINT COMPETITION GUIDELINES

for more detailed GDCCC rules click here

 

We presently judge all prints as one group and as one class.  They are, however, divided into three groups and in different classes when entered in GDCCC competitions.

 

There are three divisions of prints as follows:

 

Color (do-it-yourself) Print

 

A "Color Print" shall be any color image printed by the photographer using any available process.  Hand coloring of the print is acceptable.  Digital manipulation is acceptable.

 

Monochrome (do-it-yourself) Print

 

A "Monochrome Print" shall be any image printed by the photographer using any available process.

·       Prints that are black and white with shades of grades and up to 1 additional color are acceptable.

·       Prints that are "toned" (1 color) with up to additional color are acceptable.

·       Hand coloring of that 1 additional color is acceptable.

·       Digital manipulation is acceptable.

 

Commercial Print

 

A "Commercial Print" shall be any image (Color of B&W) printed by someone other than the photographer using any available process.

 

 General Rules

 

·       The original exposure must be the work of the exhibitor.

·       There must not be any identification on the front of the print.

·       There must not be anything on the print and its mounting that will damage other prints when stacked during a competition or packed for storage and travel between competitions, such as, but not limited to, sticky spots, ribbons, staples and medals.

·       For Color Print and Monochrome Print Divisions, the final print must be the work of the exhibitor.

·       All prints shall be mounted on a single 16" x 20" backboard with only a single or no mat board.  No wood, rough material or frames are allowed.

·     For all Print Divisions, any size prints up to 16" x 20" are eligible for entering.

SLIDE COMPETITION GUIDELINES

 

1.   Members in good standing - current dues paid in full - may submit up to two slides in each category.

2.   All slides submitted for W.O.C.C. club competition MUST:

a.   be marked with legible dot on lower left corner when viewed upright.

b.   have your name on the slide mount.

c.   have title on slide mount (when slides are identified after judging, give your name and title of slide).

d.   West Oakland Camera Club must appear on slide mount.

e.   slides not marked correctly will be ineligible for G.D.C.C.C. competition.

3.   All slides submitted for club competition should be left at club for a minimum of 30 days.  This will allow W.O.C.C. slides to be submitted to G.D.C.C.C. competitions.

4.   All slides kept for council competition are well cared for and will be returned if not used.  If you need a slide back, just ask and it will be returned to you.

5.   Any slides that place at G.D.C.C.C. competitions will be entered in the G.D.C.C.C. year end competition and will be returned in January.

6.   New members may compete in either beginner or advanced classification, based on their judgment of experience level. Once a persons slide is entered in competition, that person will begin at that level and progress from there.

  7.    New members from other camera clubs may compete in the same classification as in their previous club.

 

         Categories

 

   1.   Nature: - Nature in all its forms, including the many facets of Botany, Geology, and Zoology.  Human elements, if present, should be unobtrusive and enhance the nature story.  Those depicting cultivated plants, domestic animals or pets, still-life studies, mounted specimens, museum pieces or groupings, or similar subjects are NOT eligible.   Digital Slides are not acceptable in the Nature Division.

 

2.   Open: Any slide except those slides in which a wild animal, bird or insect fills more than one-third of the frame and there are no other factors that prevent that slide from being accepted in the Nature Slide Division.  Any slide NOT acceptable in the Nature Division is acceptable as Open.

 

Digital Slides that are submitted in the Open Division, must come from a photograph or montage of photographs taken by the entrant on film or electronically recorded.  All work, computer images, photography and image manipulation, with the exception of generating the transparency, must have been created personally by the author.

 

3.   Assignments: - We encourage members to submit slides taken specifically for the club assignment.  The list of assignments will be issued in December for the upcoming year.

Classifications (and definitions for newcomers)

 

1.   Beginner:

a.   Those who have little or no experience in photography or its technique.

b.   To advance, a person must have a combined total or 20 points (first, second or third place awards) to move to the Advanced Class.

2.   Advanced:

a.   Those with a general knowledge of photography and its technique.

b.   To advance, a person must have a combined total of 35 points (first, second or third place awards) to advance to the Salon Class.

3.   Salon:

a.   Those who have considerable experience and have demonstrated expertise in photographic techniques.

b.   To advance, a person must have a combined total of 50 points (first, second or third place awards to advance to the Star Class.

4.   Star:   -   The highest classification offered at W.O.C.C.

 

Judging of Slides

1.   Judges will be selected on the night of the competition from the membership.

2.   Every member will be given the opportunity to judge.

3.   Votes: Each of six judges will award one (1) to ten (10) points for each slide entered.

example:

perfect slide          10 points

above average      8 points

average                 6 points

below average      4 points

poor                        2 points

4.   A Recorder and Score Keeper will tally, record and announce the results to the membership.

5.   Winning Slides:

a.   the slide or slides with the highest number of points in each category will be awarded first place and receive one point.

b.   the slide or slides with the second highest number of points in each category will be awarded second place and receive one point.

c.   the slide or slides with the third highest number of points in each category will be awarded third place and receive one point.

d.   the slide or slides with the fourth highest number of points in each category will be awarded honorable mention.  No points are awarded for HM's and are not used for advancement.

6.   Point Records:

a.   point records shall be kept for five years.  After that time they will be eliminated from the records.

b.   members who rejoin after a  five year absence will be considered as a new member.

c.   original point sheets from club meetings will be kept for one year.  Any member with a discrepancy, shall notify record keeper immediately upon discovery.


How to Label Slides For Competition


     1.  Members in good standing - Current dues paid - may submit up to two slides
            in each category, i.e. (2) in nature, (2) in open.

       2. All slides submitted for W.O.C.C. competition must: (see below)
             a. be marked with a legible dot on the lower left corner when viewed
                 upright
             b.  have your name on the slide
             c.  have title on the slide
             d.  have "West Oakland Camera Club" on the slide

      3. Slides not labeled correctly will be ineligible for council competitions.
